What Moves EUR/CHF

A pair's price is one currency's value measured against another, so the economy behind each side matters.

Euro (EUR)

Eurozone (20 EU countries) · European Central Bank (ECB) · Free float

The Euro is the world's second most traded and held reserve currency, shared by twenty European Union countries with a single monetary policy.

Major contributors to the economy

  • Advanced manufacturing and cars (Germany)
  • Services and finance
  • Tourism
  • Chemicals and pharmaceuticals
  • Agriculture and food

Key factors

  • ECB interest-rate policy. ECB decisions and guidance on rates and bond buying are the main driver of the Euro.
  • Eurozone inflation and growth. Flash inflation figures and business surveys (PMIs) shift rate expectations.
  • Energy prices. Europe imports most of its energy, so high gas and oil prices weigh on the Euro.
  • Political and debt risk. Elections and bond-spread stress in members such as Italy can hurt the currency.

Swiss Franc (CHF)

Switzerland · Swiss National Bank (SNB) · Free float (with SNB intervention)

The Swiss Franc is a safe-haven currency backed by Switzerland's political neutrality, low debt, current-account surpluses and large gold reserves.

Major contributors to the economy

  • Banking and wealth management
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Precision machinery and watches
  • Commodity trading

Key factors

  • Safe-haven flows. Geopolitical stress usually strengthens the Franc.
  • SNB policy and intervention. The SNB sets low rates and sometimes sells Francs to stop excessive strength.
  • Swiss inflation. Low inflation gives the SNB room to keep rates low.

How EUR and CHF Interact

The Swiss Franc is a traditional safe haven. In periods of market stress, investors tend to move money into it, which often pushes it higher against the Euro even when local economic data is unchanged.

Central-bank policy matters on both sides: the European Central Bank (ECB) and the Swiss National Bank (SNB). When one of them is expected to keep interest rates higher than the other, that currency usually attracts capital and strengthens; a narrowing gap tends to reverse the move.

Markets to Watch

Why EUR/CHF Matters to Tanzanian Traders

EUR/CHF lets traders in Tanzania trade a view on two economies without the US Dollar in between. Spreads are a little wider than on the majors, so it suits traders who already know how the two currencies behave.
