What is MetaTrader 5?

MetaTrader 5 (MT5) is a widely used trading platform made by MetaQuotes and offered by many brokers. It runs on Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac and in a web browser. Your broker gives you the login details and server name.

Logging in

  1. Install MT5 from your phone's app store or your broker's website.
  2. Choose Manage accounts → Login to an existing account.
  3. Search for your broker's server (shown in your welcome email), then enter the account number and password.

Start with a demo login until you are comfortable.

Adding currency pairs

Open Quotes (mobile) or Market Watch (desktop) and add the pairs you trade. Each row shows the bid and ask.

Reading a chart

  • Change the timeframe (for example H1 for one-hour candles).
  • Switch to candlesticks if the chart shows bars or a line.
  • Use the crosshair to read exact prices.

Placing a trade with a stop loss

  1. Tap the pair and choose Trade (mobile) or New Order (desktop).
  2. Set the volume in lots, for example 0.01.
  3. Enter a stop loss and take profit price.
  4. Tap Buy by Market or Sell by Market.

Check the volume carefully before confirming.

Managing and closing trades

Open trades appear in the Trade tab. You can modify the stop loss or take profit, or close the trade. The tab also shows balance, equity, margin and free margin.
